Death date confirmed by BC Vital Statistics record.

From his nephew?s (Elmer Howard) family history:

He was also a bachelor, but not so shy or retiring as was Samuel. He left his native Ontario in 1900 and has made his home, as you may know, in and around Kamloops. He was a great little man. Although he never was very big, it took a mighty good man to keep near him at a days work, He farmed or ranched most of his life. I believe that he proved up three homesteads (that is what he told me and I have no reason to doubt his word), one homestead on Rose Hill, one at Ducks, and one at Heffley Creek. When he had work to do, he did it well and quickly. When he wanted to rest, he turned his stock (two horses) out to pasture, and went away for a month or so on holiday. When he was hungry he took plenty time to cook, eat, and wash the dishes. When he was sick he made a brew of bark, herbs, Oregon grapes etc. and cured himself. I saw him in the fall of ?59, and he was as spry as a young colt. I get letters from him regularly. He writes and reads without the aid of glasses. He enjoys his meals as he always has, but does not eat meat the past year or so. From web site of Curtis Boyle, Jan. 2011.

From his nephew?s (Elmer Howard) family history:

Peter was a stonemason, who worked with my father. He was an easygoing sort of fellow, a great planner, a good father, and was always kind to me when I was a boy. He used to often see that I had a little silver to jingle in my pocket. He always appeared happy and could see the funny side of life. He loved a joke whether it was on him or the other fellow. He married Vina Neeley, raised six children: Herb, Fred, Myrtle, Olive, Jean, and Margaret. He lived in Toronto in later years where he carried on as a building contractor until he died, comparatively young ?56 I believe. From web site of Curtis Boyle, Jan., 2011.

    Notes:

The December 30, 1897 Flesherton Advance newspaper reported that he had just return home from working in nearby Bolton, ON. From web site of Curtis Boyle, Jan 2011.

Markdale paper of 12 Jul 1906, p8, "Mrs Isaac Holley & dau Edna left for the west last Tue."

no mention of Isaac in his dads obit of 1917

He returned to Vandeleur for a visit in July of 1919.

Isaac never seemed to stay in one place for long. After his 2nd wife left him, he took his youngest daughter and moved to Heffley Creek, BC in 1924, leaving his oldest daughter by herself in Lintlaw. His brother George lived at the next small town over (Vinsulla). They moved back to Saskatchewan in 1926. He was a United (Protestant) church member.

Strangley, Isaac is not mentioned in his dad?s obituary of 1917. The Markdale paper for July 12, 1906, on page 8 mentions ?Mrs. Isaac Holley and daughter Edna left for the west last Tuesday? (July 3rd or 10th, depending on when the article was written).

In the 1906 Saskatchewan census, he is listed as 29 years old (which would be off by half a year), and the census was done literally within weeks of their leaving Ontario (July 27,1906). Also, the census lists Charley (his brother Charles) as a brother living with them, age 21 or 27 (27 would be correct), and he is single at the time. At the time, they were living with George Sewell and his family (A.E. Surwell, Charles Surwell and Wilbert R. Surwell...ages 84,24,22 and 20 respectively). Other Sewells lived on the next household over as well, and they were originally from Grey County,ON, the same county as the Holley?s, and probably knew each other. After Louisa died, Isaac met with her sister Carrie (also recently widowed) and married her in Winnipeg, to help raise the kids. They split up in 1924, with her moving back to Detroit. From Violetta?s recollection in 1988: Around 1912, they moved to Invermay, where Isaac ran a livery barn for about a year. After he married Carrie in 1912, they moved to White Sand River Bank (Silver Lake) around 1914. Schools mentioned were Nebern and Dunrobin (sp?) school 4-5 miles from Tuffnell. This is just off of highway 16, southwest of Lintlaw,SK. After Carrie left in 1924, Isaac and Etta moved to Heffley Creek, BC (near Isaac?s brother George), while Edna stayed behind in Saskatchewan (I believe with the Boyles). From the Lintlaw History book (from the George Sewell section:)

?My Dad [Charlie Sewell] freighted for the surveyors in the early days. He brought supplies for them from Wadena, Margo, Sheho. He used to tell us of some of his trips. Once he said he and a neighbor named Holley, who had homesteaded with them, went for load each. They had two teams of oxen. They got one team stuck in a slough and Ike Holley had to walk out on the wagon tongue and hold the oxens nose out of the water until Dad got the other team hooked on and pulled them out.

One night my Dad was called to drive to Wadena fifty miles away to get a doctor with horses for Ike Holly?s wife who was going to give birth to a baby. They got back in time to save the baby girl but too late for Mrs. Holley. The girl, I believe still lives in Saskatchewan someplace.? This is referring to Louisa and Violetta.

In 1926, Isaac and Etta moved back to Lintlaw and stayed with Thomas Boyle and his new wife, Isaac?s eldest daughter, Edna.

Ike went to visit Flesherton in early June, 1948, according to the Flesherton newspaper.

From his nephew?s (Elmer Howard) family history:

Isaac was a good matured harem-scarem sort of fellow. He married and went west when I was a boy of 10 or 11, so I knew little of him personally. He had three wives (all legitimate), and was the father of two girls. He died a year or so ago in 1958 I think, aged around 86. He made his home for many years in and around Lintlaw, Saskatchewan. Notes:

Living with brothers and sisters, in the household next to their parents, in 1901 census. He is listed as the head of the household at the time, even though in the middle of them in age.

He lived near Lucky Lake Saskatchewan for awhile before moving to BC (verified by the book ?Don?t Shoot From the Saddle? by Dr. Donald Alexander Holley).

The Flesherton Advance for Jan. 12, 1911 has a notice to the public from Robert about his having just bought out a Mr. F.J. Weber?s general store business at Kimberley, ON. It also mentions that he had just moved to Kimberley on Jan. 11.

The Flesherton Advance for Jan. 3, 1923 has Robert and two daughters (Edith and Freda) coming to visit Sam Croft and his wife on New Years, and that they were living at Theo, SK at the time.

Family officially moved to BC (near Vinsulla, initially) in 1937.

Death date from Flesherton Advance, March 31, 1943. Dr. Holley?s book says he suffered from a stroke on March 21, but survived, never recovering consciousness, for about a week. Dr. Holley found Robert lying in the snow near the woodlot on their property.

From his nephew?s (Elmer Howard) family history:

Robert Arthur was a hard working, good-natured, big, honest, handsome fellow who was also a mason, brick or stone. He farmed as a young man in partners with Chas on the old home in Ontario. He married Kate Neeley, sister to the wife of brother Peter Edward. Rob operated a general store in Kimberly, Ont. for a while; also a livery barn in Meaford Ont. Later he moved to Saskatchewan where he carried on farming. Then he moved to B.C. in the early ?30s. He passed away in the hospital at Quesnell in 1942,I think. Lived in Lucky Lake, SK as of Feb., 1921.

From his nephew?s (Elmer Howard) family history:

Charlie Herbert, the youngest of the boys. Chas, being but a few years older than myself (born the year 1879, which makes him 11 years before I), was always younger in spirit, and looks upon life as one big picnic. We have been in each other?s company so much over all the years that I have always looked upon him as more of a brother than an Uncle. We have gone on holidays together, played crib, played horseshoes, gone to parties (suffered the same gin headache), helped each other in our work, and through all the years never had a misunderstanding. Chas, is by heart a farmer, and took over the control of the old farm when quite young. As a young fellow he took up music and still draws a musical bow lover the strings of his Violin. He married in 1913 to Mae Winterburn, a country belle whose family lived in Markdale. They have one daughter, Eva, who is by profession a trained nurse (also a musician of ?note?). Chas sold the old home, and moved to Saskatchewan in 1918 where he farmed until 1936. He sold out and moved out to B.C. When Chas was farming he had to have the best of everything, such as horses, cows, pigs, poultry, etc. He figured that it cost no more to feed a pure bred animal than it did one of inferior breed, and the financial returns were much better. His reasoning must have been right, as he was always a success. I never saw his Saskatchewan farm, but have been told that it was a perfect spread and the envy of the neighbours. The late Mrs. Croft, formerly Edna Holley, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Holley was born on July 10, 1882 in Artemesia Township. She was united in marriage to Jos. Samuel Croft, who now survives her passing together with two sons, Pte. Harvey Croft of Camp Borden and Everett Croft of Flesherton. The late Mrs. Croft is also survived by four brothers: Charles, George, Issac and Samuel Holley. In religion she was Presbyterian. The late Mrs. Croft?s remains were brought from Toronto to Flesherton where the funeral will be held.

From his nephew?s (Elmer Howard) family history:

It must have been quite an adventure for a girl to be the only one in a family of nine boys, but such was the case with my Auntie Edna. First we must give you her full name, by which she was christened: Miss Ida Mary Matilda Edna Holley. She was the youngest of the family. Edna was a rather pretty girl of fairly slight build. She had beautiful large blue eyes, exceptionally long hair, a marvellous disposition and always a beautiful smile. Edna lived at home until her marriage, and was the mother of two boys. When quite a young person she was stricken with arthritis, she suffered quite badly for many years, finally passing away about 60 years of age. I had not seen her in many years and knew very little of her life and family. From web site of Curtis Boyle, Jan., 2011.
